What is a Mei-Tai (mei-tei, mai-tai, mai-tei, etc.)?

Structure:

Mei-tais (as opposed to the "mai-tais" of cocktail fame) are baby carriers of East Asian origin. Mei-tais are made of cloth, without any metal or plastic hardware, so that they are comfortable for baby and you, and conform to fit your unique shapes. The main body of the carrier holds baby comfortably, while the bottom straps wrap around your waist for support and the top straps tie around your shoulders (much like a backpack).

Uses:

Mei-tais are very versatile, in that the baby can be worn in front or on your back. We mamas have used other carriers and found that mei-tais have been the best bet for an all-around carrier - we have used them on our little infants as front-carriers and on our older babies like a backpack. This second method is especially helpful when trying to get things done around the house, as it leaves the hands free, and during errands, as baby is snug and comfy on the mama's (or papa's) back.
